The American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA), administers a national certification examination for surgical assistants, covering all surgical disciplines and all areas of perioperative medicine. The examination evaluates a candidate's knowledge of surgical anatomy, procedures and techniques, diagnostic studies, emergency situations, OSHA regulations and general patient safety. Certification is a process that helps determine, by examination, that an individual has met a national standard in both theoretical and practical knowledge in a particular field.
A Surgical Assistant is a trained individual who is able to participate and actively assist in completing the procedure safely and expeditiously. The qualifications of the person in this role may vary with the nature of the operation, the surgical specialty, and the type of hospital or ambulatory surgical facility. Surgical Assistants provide a wide variety of services and technical functions including: maintaining adequate exposure in the operating field, cutting suture materials, maintaining hemostasis, clamping and ligating bleeding vessels, and in selected instances, actually performing designated parts of a procedure. All Surgical Assistants are ethically and legally bound to practice their profession only under the direction of a supervising physician.
